Why Do I Get Cold So Easily?

ok so i’ve been wondering this for literally years. like why am i always freezing?? even when its not that cold out. i’ll be in a hoodie, fuzzy socks, curled up like a burrito and everyone else is walking around in shorts like its summer

i used to think i was just being dramatic or “thin blooded” (whatever that means lol) but after googling it a million times and also talking to my doc once or twice, i learned there’s actually a bunch of reasons why some ppl just get cold all the time.

so anyway, here’s what i found out (and yeah i’m no expert just sharing what i learned and experienced ok lol)

1. you just might be more sensitive to cold

some people just run cold. like their body feels cold faster than other ppl. it’s not like a sickness or anything, just how you’re built i guess??

especially if you’ve always been like that since forever, then yeah, prob just your body’s normal. but doesn’t make it less annoying ngl

2. bad circulation

this ones super common. if your blood doesn’t flow great, your hands and feet are gonna freeze all the time. like even if the room is warm, your fingers feel like icicles

signs of this are:

  • cold hands/feet ALL the time

  • they turn pale or bluish sometimes

  • you sit too long or don’t move much

i get this a lot especially when i work on the laptop for hours and don’t move lol

3. not eating enough

so i went on this diet once where i was barely eating like 1200 cals a day (not smart i know ) and i was SO COLD all the time. like even under blankets. turns out if you don’t eat enough, your body doesn’t make enough heat.

especially if ur not eating carbs, or skipping meals a lot. food = fuel = warmth. no fuel, no fire.

4. thyroid stuff

ok this one’s more medical. if you have a slow thyroid (called hypo… hypothy… idk the word but yeah lol), it messes with your metabolism and your temp regulation too.

you’ll feel cold all the time, tired, might gain weight, dry skin, hair falling out maybe.

you’d need a blood test for this one. pretty common in women too.

5. it’s in your genes

honestly sometimes it’s just in your DNA. like your mom’s always cold, your grandma too, now it’s your turn

some ppl just run colder, and that’s it. not everything’s a medical thing, sometimes it’s just how you are.

6. low iron (aka anemia)

iron helps carry oxygen in your blood, which your body needs for like… everything. and warmth too. if you don’t have enough iron, you’ll feel cold, tired, maybe even dizzy or look pale.

i had low iron once and i didn’t even know until i almost passed out at work

again, blood test can tell you. iron supplements or red meat / leafy greens can help.

7. stress + bad sleep

if you’re stressed 24/7 or not sleeping enough (me ‍♀️), your body gets all outta whack. like hormones go nuts and your temp reg goes down the drain.

plus being tired just makes you feel colder for some reason. like your body gives up or smth.

☕ 8. coffee or cigs

not trying to call you out but if you drink coffee 24/7 (me again), or smoke, that messes with your blood vessels and circulation. they get smaller or tighter or w/e so your hands and toes get cold easier.

doesn’t mean you have to quit (tho maybe should) but def a reason to think about.

9. maybe ur getting sick

sometimes before you even feel sick, your body starts acting weird — like you get the chills or feel colder than normal. its like your body knows something’s coming but you don’t yet.

if you’re cold + tired + a little achy = could be something brewing. cold or flu or even covid, idk.

how to stay warm (aka not freeze 24/7)

ok so here’s what helps me not turn into a human popsicle:

  • layer UP. socks, hoodie, blanket, repeat

  • drink warm stuff — tea is god tier

  • MOVE around, even just walking a bit helps

  • warm foods >> cold salads when you feel freezing

  • check your iron & thyroid if nothing helps

  • heated blanket = best thing ever. no joke.

⚠️ disclaimer ⚠️

ok so just to say it again — i’m not a doctor lol. this is just me writing stuff from my own experience and googling and a couple convos w/ my doc. don’t take this as medical advice or anything like that. if you’re really cold all the time and feel like something’s wrong, go talk to someone who actually went to med school
