Understanding Nutrition: The Basics of What We Eat

Ok so nutrition is like, the stuff we eat and how it effects our body. Most people kinda ignore it or just eat whatever they want without thinking about it too much, which honestly same. But turns out, what we eat actually really matters more than we think. Like A LOT.

Nutrition is about how food gives us energy and nutrients to live and do stuff. So basically without nutrition, we can’t survive?? Which is wild cause most of us just be out here skipping breakfast and living off chips and soda lol.

So ya, nutrition is important.

Wait… What even is nutrition?

Nutrition is the science of food and how our bodies use it. It’s not just about “eating healthy” or going on diets. It’s about giving your body what it actually needs, not just what tastes good or is convenient (even tho pizza is like, always a good idea).

Our bodies need certain stuff – like vitamins, minerals, carbs, fats, protein and water – to do things like walk, breath, think, digest food, etc. Without the right stuff we can get tired, sick, or just feel blehh in general.

But honestly most people don’t think about any of this, we just eat what’s around or what’s cheap or what we’re craving. And then wonder why we feel like garbage lol.

6 kinda important nutrients

So apparently there’s 6 main nutrients?? Idk who decided this but here they are:

1. Carbs

People say carbs are bad but actually they’re not?? Carbs give us ENERGY, like real quick. When you eat pasta, bread, or sugar your body turns it into glucose (which is sugar) and uses it for fuel.

But there’s good carbs and bad carbs. Like, fruit and brown rice = good. Donuts and soda = not great but still delicious tbh. Too much sugar can make you crash tho and then you’re just sleepy and mad at everything.

2. Protein

Protein is like the body builder of nutrients. It helps build muscle, fix stuff in your body, make hormones and other science things. You can get it from meat, fish, eggs, nuts, beans… even some veggies.

If you don’t get enough protein you might be tired, get weak, or just feel ugh. Especially if you workout a lot.

3. Fats

Yesss fat. Everyone thinks fat is evil but it’s actually HELPFUL. Some fats are good for you like avocados, olive oil, and nuts. Others like deep fried stuff… maybe not so great if you eat them every single day.

Fat gives you energy, helps with your brain, and makes you feel full longer. So don’t be scared of fat. Just don’t go overboard.

4. Vitamins and Minerals

This is the stuff your body needs in small amounts but they do BIG jobs. Like vitamin C helps fight colds. Iron helps your blood carry oxygen. Calcium helps bones and teeth.

You can get these from fruits, veggies, dairy, meat and stuff. Or take a multi-vitamin if you’re lazy like me lol.

5. Water

Honestly… most of us are lowkey dehydrated all the time and don’t even realize it. Water is IMPORTANT. Like more important than we act.

Water helps with digestion, temp control, energy, skin, EVERYTHING. If you feel like crap, try drinking water first before assuming you’re dying.

You’re supposed to drink like 6-8 glasses a day? But idk I just sip from a water bottle when I remember

So like, why does nutrition even matter?

Bc without proper nutrition your body’s just not gonna work right. You’ll feel more tired, you’ll get sick more, your brain won’t focus, and over time it can lead to bigger problems like diabetes, heart disease, or even cancer. Not to be dramatic but it’s kinda serious.

Also bad nutrition can mess with your mood. Ever eat like 3 slices of greasy pizza and then feel like a zombie after? Yeah. Or skip breakfast and feel like you could murder someone by 11am? That’s nutrition too.

Eating better helps you feel better. Like for real.

Nutrition isn’t just for health freaks

You don’t have to be a fitness bro or like some salad-obsessed person to care about nutrition. It’s literally for everyone. Kids need it to grow, adults need it to not fall apart, and old ppl need it so their bones don’t break when they sneeze.

It’s not about being skinny. You can be skinny and unhealthy. You can be chubby and actually have a better diet than someone skinnier. It’s more about what you’re eating not just how much.
